GAM-Budget Schedule

About Session Schedule

The constitution requires the Governor to submit a budget to the General Assembly one week after (or nine days if it is the first year of the Governor’s first term) the opening of each regular session. The constitution also requires executive officials to appear before the General Assembly to explain and answer questions about their budgets if they are requested to do so by either house.

During session, the budget committees or their subcommittees hold public hearings on the budget bills following a schedule prepared and approved by the chairs of both committees (House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee). Hearings are scheduled the third through the seventh weeks of the session.

At hearings, representatives of the agencies explain their budgets and, in particular, attempt to persuade legislators of the need for the level of funding proposed by the Governor. Policy matters relating to an agency frequently are discussed at budget hearings as well.
