The Honorable Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr.
President of the Senate
State House
Annapolis MD 21401

Dear Mr. President:

In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the Maryland Constitution, I have today vetoed Senate Bill 229.

This bill creates an income tax subtraction modification for income related to recovered Holocaust assets and distributions made to an individual, or the individual's spouse or descendant, because of the person's status as a victim of Nazi persecution and creates an exemption against the State inheritance tax.

House Bill 177, which was passed by the General Assembly and signed by me on April 13, 1999, accomplishes the same purpose. Therefore, it is not necessary for me to sign Senate Bill 229.

Sincerely,
Parris N. Glendening
Governor
