Dear Mr. President:

In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the Maryland Constitution, I have today vetoed Senate Bill 701 - Sales and Use Tax - Exemption for Digital Telecommunications Machinery and Equipment.

This bill exempts from the sales and use tax digital telecommunications machinery or equipment that enables a television or radio station to originate and broadcast, or receive and broadcast, digital signals and that has been purchased to comply with the federal Telecommunications Act of 1996.

House Bill 794, which was passed by the General Assembly and signed by me on April 25, 2000, accomplishes the same purpose. Therefore, it is not necessary for me to sign Senate Bill 701.
