Dear Mr. Speaker:

In accordance with Article II, Section 17 of the Maryland Constitution, today I have vetoed House Bill 1347 - Retirement and Pensions - Reemployment of Retirees.

This pension bill exempts from an offset of a retirement allowance retirees of the Teachers' Retirement System or Teachers' Pension System who retired as teachers, principals, and supervisors of principals. These retirees of the Teachers' Retirement System or Pension System may only be reemployed for a specified period of time. The bill also prohibits those employees from being rehired within a specified period of time, and requires local superintendents to approve hirings, determine placement, and certify information within a specified period of time. Senate Bill 663, which was passed by the General Assembly and signed by me, accomplishes the same purpose. Therefore, it is not necessary for me to sign House Bill 1347.
